Spelling: This week our spelling words will focus on long /a/ words with the following endings -ake, -ame, -ate.

make, take, came, game, gate, late, page, space, why, school

Challenge Words: grateful, amaze, bracelet, escape, careful

Reading Workshop: Students will wrapping of the word detectives unit this week. Lesson 17 will focus on students fixing up the tricky words, then they can reread to make their reading sound smooth. Lesson 18 is a celebration of all that they have learned during this unit.
 
Writers Workshop: This week students will be starting our non-fiction writing unit. Lesson 3 will have students picture who their readers will be. Then, to reach their readers, they will imagine the questions they might ask and answer them in my writing. Lesson 4 will teach students to include illustrations in their teaching books that help teach their readers more.

Phonics: Students will continue to work in the mystery of the silent E unit.  Lesson 15 will continue to focus on compound words.  Lesson 16 will remind word detectives that when a word is really tough, they think about every word they know to track down the parts that look alike. Lesson 17 will teach students that a word detective’s job is never done.  They are on the case whenever they read and write.  When they see a tough word in their book, or want to write a tough word, they can use everything they know about letters and sounds to solve it all on their own!   

Math: This week students will be starting module 2.  Lesson seven thru nine will have students focus on making 10 when one part is 8.   Lesson 10 will have students make ten when one part is 7, 8, or 9. 

Social Studies: Students will be starting a new unit focusing on holidays around the world. Students will learn about the traditions of Italy and Mexico.  This week students will be presenting their own holiday traditions.  Don't forget to take a look at the attached calendar to see when your child is presenting.

Spelling: This week our spelling words will focus the /th. and /sh/ digraphs.

Reading Workshop: Students will continue to work in the word detectives unit. Lesson 14 will remind readers to be on the lookout for vowel teams and to not trip them up their reading.  Lesson 15 will teach readers that word detectives use parts of words to figure out new words. When they come to a tricky word, they can think “does this look like a word I know?” Lesson 16 will teach students that word detectives watch out for unusual words in their books. They notice when words they know are a part of words they don’t know, like in contractions.
 
Writers Workshop: This week students will be starting our non-fiction writing unit. Lesson 1 will teach writers that to get started writing a teaching book, a writer becomes a teacher and teaches about a topic. Lesson 2 will focus on planning. Writers will plan their teaching books by saying their information across your fingers and then quickly sketching.

Phonics: Students will continue to work in the mystery of the silent E unit.  Lesson 12 will teach students to look for the double consonants hiding in the middle of words.  They can pull them apart to break the word into two syllables. Then they can put them back together to read the whole word. Lesson 13 will remind students to look for three letter blends before a vowel. Lesson 14 will have students be on the lookout for contractions.  

Math: This week students will be starting module 2.  Lesson three, lesson four and lesson five will have students make ten when one addend is nine. Lesson six will have students match 10+ addition problems.  

Social Studies: Students will be starting a new unit focusing on holidays around the world. Students will learn about the traditions of the Netherlands and Italy.  Starting next week students will be presenting their own holiday traditions.  Don't forget to take a look at the attached calendar to see when your child is presenting.

Spelling: This week our spelling words will focus on fun words for Thanksgiving! Students will not have a test this week but will just use these words as practice.

Challenge Words

Reading Workshop: Students will continue to work in the word detectives unit. Lesson 13 will teach students when they see a big word has an ending they know, they can break the ending off to figure out the part that is left over. Then, they can put the parts back together to read the whole word in a way that makes sense and sounds right.  
 
Writers Workshop: This week students will listen to the story How-to Catch a Turkey by Adam Wallace.  They will then complete a hot-to writing piece to support the story.  On Tuesday students will be writing about what they are thankful for.              

Phonics: Students will continue to work in the mystery of the silent E unit.  Lesson 10 will emphasize the importance of snap words. Lesson 11 will remind students that any word can become a snap word.   

Math: This week students will be starting module 2.  Lesson one and lesson two will have students read word problems and add 3 addends by making ten first.        

Social Studies: Students will be starting a new unit focusing on Pilgrims and Native Americans.

Spelling: This week our spelling words will focus on short /u/ vowels!

Reading Workshop: Students will continue to work in the word detectives unit. Lesson 10 will teach readers to scoop words in groups that go together.  This will help make reading sound smooth like they are talking.  Lesson 11 will have students break long words into smaller parts. Lesson 12 will teach readers to pay close attention to the beginning of words.  They'll look to see if any letters go together.   
 
Writers Workshop: For the next few weeks students will be revisiting the How-To writing unit from kindergarten. Lesson 4 will remind students to know how to do things both at home and at school.  Lesson 5 will have writers add details to make their writing clear and to help their writer know exactly what to do.  Lesson 6 will remind writers that they can also teach the reader through detailed pictures.             

Phonics: Students will continue to work in the mystery of the silent E unit.  Lesson 7 will have students work with long vowel /i/ silent e.  Lesson 8 will have students review the long vowels silent e that they have learned looking words words in a students writing and helping make any necessary corrections.  Lesson 9 will have students work with long vowel /e/ silent e.   

Math: This week students will be reviewing for our end of module assessment.  Monday will be a review day and students will take the assessment on Tuesday and Wednesday.       

Social Studies: Students will be starting a new unit focusing on Pilgrims and Native Americans.

🎃Halloween: On Friday, we will be having a Halloween themed day. Activities, read alouds and games will all be halloween related. At lunch, students will have the option to change into their costumes for the remainder of the day. In the afternoon, we will be reading "Room on a Broom" by Julia Donaldson and then watching the short film and comparing and contrasting the two. If you do not want your child to participate in any of the activities we have planned, please email their teacher.

Reading Workshop: Students will be starting a new unit called word detectives. Lesson one will teach students that when they notice a problem, they stop to solve it. Lesson two will teach students that they need to look closely at a word from start to end. Lastly, lesson three will remind students to use everything they know to solve the problem such as checking the picture, looking at all the parts of the word, looking at the beginning sounds, do a double check and to try the word two ways.    

Writers Workshop: We are continuing to focus on writing a small moment.  This week writers will learn that to make their writing really special they can turn to craft moves they've learned from studying mentor authors.  Once craft move they can try is telling the exact actions people do.  Writers will also learn that writers make some words big, bold, and different shapes to show that these words are important to the story.  They should be read in a strong voice.         

Phonics: Students will continue to study sight words.  Students will find their own power words that have power to help them spell lots and lots of words. They will also learn that they can add blends, not just single letters to the front of their snap words. Lastly students will learn that when they know more about letters and sounds, words and word parts, they read everything differently because they are bringing all that they know to whatever they read.        

Math: This week students will be able to use organized math drawing to solve for the unknown, and identify the parts of a whole, .   

Science: Students will continue to learn about sound and light.

Spelling: This week we will have fall spelling words!

Challenge Words: harvest, leaves, autumn, Halloween, pumpkin 

Reading Workshop: Students will continue to build good reading habits.  This week students will be focusing on smoothing out their reading.  We don't want to read like a robot.  Students will also learn another good habit when reading tricky words.  When reading tricky words, always to the vowel two ways. Read it with the short vowel and then the long vowel sound and decide which one sounds right and makes sense.  

Writers Workshop: We are continuing to focus on writing a small moment.  This week they work on editing their writing and try to include different types of punctuation such as periods, exclamation marks, and question marks.  They will use a writing checklist to help edit their writing.  Students will also learn that we read books by authors and notice something special in their book and try to add it to their own writing.        

Phonics: Students will continue to study sight words.  They'll be reminded that not only do they read sight words but they also write them.  Students will be reminded that it isn't enough to just know a ton about words and letters and sounds.  What really matters is that they use everything they've learned to read and write well. Students will learn that there are power words on our word wall.  These words are powerful because they make that word but also to make a ton of other words.        

Math: This week students will be able to identify the parts of a math story.  Students will also be able to use a number line to solve subtraction problems by counting on.   

Science: Students will continue to learn about sound and light.

Spelling: This week we will be reviewing words we have had over the last few weeks

Challenge Words: admire, needs, napkin, gather, offer 

Reading Workshop: Students will continue to build good reading habits.  They will learn to do double checks.  They check to make sure a word makes sense with the story and they also check the letters on the page to be sure the word looks right. This week they'll be reminded that readers don't give up. They try and try again and if they read across the word and it still doesn't make sense they can check the pictures to see if they are on the right track.  Lastly, students will learn that when reading tricky words, one of the hardest parts will be the vowels because they can make a lot of different sounds.  It's important to try to read the vowel sound two ways, short and long, and decide which one makes sense. 

Writers Workshop: We are focusing on writing a small moment.  Writers will learn that another way writers bring their stories to life is by including what their characters feel. They will learn that another way to bring a story to life is to act out what really happened and notice what they can add to their story. Writer's will also incorporate strategies to help them spell unknown words. It's helpful to find a word they already know, one that sounds like the word they want to spell, to help them figure out the parts they don't know.       

Phonics: Students will continue to study sight words and discover how words work, notice ways that they are spelled and how they are the same and not the same.  They'll be focusing on sight words with the vowel /o/.  Students will also be reminded that any word can be turned into a snap word.  The way they have studied names and other sigth words, works for studying all words.      

Math: This week students will be able to add doubles and doubles plus 1 and find patterns in an addition chart.  

Science: Students will continue to learn about sound and light.
